Introduction to Huawei Modular Switches

Ethernet switches are one of the products which Huawei engineers are most familiar with. The complicated models, various specifications and similar names often confuse people. I always have to turn to a lot of reference material, checking and comparing, when asked about the differences in models and specifications as well as in features. As the saying goes, prolonged illness makes a doctor of a patient. HongTelecom have summarized some rules of the switches to share.

An Unspoken Rule of Naming Huawei Modular Switches

Huawei switches consist of the S1700, S2700, S3700, S5700, S6700, S7700, S9700 and S12700 series, following the unspoken rule in the industry that bigger numbers indicate higher performances. First, let’s make a comparison among the S7700, S9700 and S12700 series.

The last two figures in the names of Huawei modular switches represent the number of service slots. For example, “S12712” represents that this model has 12 service slots. The following pictures show all the modular switches of Huawei, including two models of the S12700, three models of the S9700 and three models of the S7700.

Three Modular Switch Series Have Witnessed the Network Development

Huawei developed the S7700 as core switches at the first stage of network development.

Increasing network scale and bandwidth requirements brought about higher requirements for switches’ performances at the second stage of network development. Huawei developed the more powerful S9700 series. Then the S7700 switches were positioned as core switches for medium-scale enterprises and aggregation switches for large-scale enterprises. Meanwhile, Huawei started developing CE series data center switches to adapt to rapid development of data center networks.

At the third stage of network development, the network demand increased significantly and the requirements for quick response became higher and higher. Huawei developed the S12700 series agile switches which could also be used as enterprise core switches. The agile switches enable complex service requirements to be satisfied in as short as 6 months, compared to the 3-year period on traditional switches. In the meantime, Huawei upgraded the S7700 and S9700 to agile switches based on the S12700 development experience.

The following table and picture show the recommended locations of modular product models (take the S12700 as an example).

Agile Switches Amaze the World

Huawei implemented many new functions on the S12700 based on customer requirements in the first six months (October 2013 to April 2014) since the lunch. In addition, Huawei shared these functions on the S9700 and S7700. Concurrently, Huawei is trying to develop fixed agile switches to share all the functions of the S12700.

Hardware Installation and Use Precautions of Huawei CloudEngine (CE) 8800,7800, 6800, and 5800 Series switches

Huawei Data Center Switch includes CloudEngine CE12800, CE12800E, CE1800V, CE5800, CE6800, CE7800, CE8800 Series. In this article, HongTelecom will introduce the Hardware Installation and Use Precautions for CE8800CE7800CE6800CE5800 series switches.

Chassis

  • 40GE ports of the CE5850-48T4S2Q-EI cannot be split into 10GE ports.
  • 10GE ports of the CE8850-32CQ-EI, CE6810EI, CE6810LI, CE6850HI, CE6851HI, CE6855, CE6856, CE6860, CE6865, CE6870, CE6875, CE6880, and CE5855EI series switches do not support OSXD22N00 (LRM) or LE2MXSC80FF0 (linear) optical modules.
  • When a GE copper module is installed on a 10GE optical interface, in V100R001C00, the interface cannot connect to a 10M/100M interface. In V100R002C00 and later versions,
    • On the CE8860EI, CE8861EI, CE8868EI, and CE6860EI, such an interface cannot connect to a 10M/100M/1000M interface.
    • On the CE5810EI, CE6875EI, and CE6865EI, such an interface can only connect to a 1000M interface.
    • On the CE6880-24S4Q2CQ-EI, such an interface can only connect to a 100M/1000M interface.
    • On the CE6880-48S4Q2CQ-EI, interfaces 1 to 12 can connect to 10M/100M/1000M interfaces, whereas interfaces 13 to 48 can only connect to 100M/1000M interfaces.
    • On other switch models, such an interface can only connect to a 10M/100M interface.
  • 10GE SFP+ Ethernet optical ports of the CE6850U-48S6Q-HI and CE6850U-24S2Q-HI can use 2GE/4GE/8GE FC optical modules.
  • When a CE6850-48T4Q-EI switch uses 350 W AC power modules and all its ports are in use, the length of each network cable used on the switch cannot exceed 30 m.
  • The two ETH management ports of the CE6855-48T6Q-HI, CE6856-48T6Q-HI, CE6850HI, and CE6850U-HI series switches cannot be used simultaneously. Choose one of them and use the other as a backup.
  • 600 W AC power modules are recommended for the CE6850-48T4Q-EI of V100R002C00 or a later version.
  • A 5 m SFP+ high-speed cable cannot be used to connect 10GE optical ports between the CE5850EI (running a version prior to V100R005C10) and CE5855EI switches. To connect the 10GE optical ports of the two switches, use any of the following methods:

    • Use a 1 m, 3 m, 7 m, or 10 m SFP+ high-speed cable.
    • Use an active optical cable (AOC) or optical modules and optical fibers.
    • Upgrade the system software of the CE5850EI switch to V100R005C10 or a later version.
  • A 5 m 1-to-4 QSFP+ high-speed cable cannot be used to connect a 40GE optical port (split into four 10GE ports) and 10GE optical ports between the CE5850EI (running a version prior to V100R005C10) and CE5855EI switches. To connect the 10GE and 40GE optical ports of the two switches, use any of the following methods:

    • Use a 1 m or 3 m 1-to-4 QSFP+ high-speed cable.
    • Use optical modules and optical fibers.
    • Upgrade the system software of the CE5850EI switch to V100R005C10 or a later version.
  • When the power module and fan module use forcible heat dissipation, they must use the same airflow method. For example, if the power module with back-to-front airflow is used, the fan module with back-to-front airflow must be used.
  • The console port and Mini USB port share one internal serial port. You can use the console port or Mini USB port as the serial port according to your needs. When the Mini USB is activated, the console port cannot be used. When both the console port and Mini USB port have a cable connected, the Mini USB port is used.
  • The combo port automatically selects the working mode as follows:
    • If the optical port has no optical module installed and the electrical port has no network cable connected, the port type depends on which port is connected first. If the electrical port is connected by a network cable first, the electrical port is used for data switching. If the optical port has an optical module installed first, the optical port is used for data switching.
    • If the electrical port has a network cable connected and is in Up state, the electrical port is still used for data switching when the optical port has an optical module installed.
    • If the optical port has an optical module installed and is in Up state, the optical port is still used for data switching when the electrical port has a network cable connected.
    • If the optical port has an optical module and fiber installed and the electrical port has a network cable connected, the optical port is used for data switching after the switch restarts.

Card

  • Each 40GE QSFP+ optical port of the CE88-D16Q card can only be split into two 10GE ports. When the port works in 2*10GE mode, it can use:
    • QSFP+ optical module and MPO-4*DLC or MPO-8*FC optical fiber (Among the four pairs of DLC or FC fibers, only the two pairs marked 1 and 2 can be used to connect to remote interfaces.)
    • QSFP+ to 4*SFP+ high-speed cable (Among the four SFP+ wires, only the two marked A and B can be used to connect to remote interfaces.)
    • QSFP+ to 4*SFP+ AOC cable (Among the four SFP+ wires, only the two marked 1 and 2 can be used to connect to remote interfaces.)
  • The 24 10GE/25GE SFP28 optical ports on a CE88-D24S2CQ card are divided into 6 port groups, with four ports in each group (1-4, 5-8, 9-12…21-24).
    • If port mode 10g or undo port mode 10g is configured on any port in a port group, all the other ports in this group also work at 10 Gbit/s or 25 Gbit/s.
    • When the ports in a port group work at 25 Gbit/s, they support only 25GE modules or cables and will go Down if other types of modules or cables are used. When the ports in a port group work at 10 Gbit/s, they support only 10GE or 25GE variable-rate modules or cables and will go Down if other types of modules or cables are used.
    • If the switch is running a version earlier than V200R002C50, the ports in a port group must use the same type of transmission medium (copper or fiber). This constraint does not apply to V200R002C50 and later versions.
    • The 24 25GE/16G FC (SFP28) optical ports of the CE88-D24S2CQ-U card work at 25 Gbit/s by default and do not support GE/10GE auto-sensing. You can set the port rate to 10 Gbit/s using the port mode 10gcommand.

      The 24 25GE/16G FC (SFP28) optical ports are divided into six port groups, each of which contains four ports (1-4, 5-8, 9-12…21-24).

      • If port mode 10g or undo port mode 10g is configured on any port in a port group, all the other ports in this group also work at 10 Gbit/s or 25 Gbit/s.
      • When the ports in a port group work at 25 Gbit/s, they support only 25GE modules or cables and will go Down if other types of modules or cables are used. When the ports in a port group work at 10 Gbit/s, they support only 10GE or 25GE variable-rate modules or cables and will go Down if other types of modules or cables are used.
      • The maximum rate supported by a 16G FC optical port is 14 Gbit/s.

Power Module

  • All power modules are hot swappable. Before replacing a power module in a switch, make sure that the switch can be powered by the other power module after the power module is removed. Otherwise, services on the switches will be interrupted when the power module is removed.
  • A switch must use the power modules it supports.
  • Power modules in a chassis must have the same power and same heat dissipation method.
  • When only one power module is installed in a chassis, install a filler panel on the empty power supply slot.
  • Before powering off a switch, turn off all its power modules.
  • The ES0W2PSA0150 power module can only be used in the CE5855EI and cannot be used in any other models.

Fan Module

  • A chassis must use fan modules with the same airflow direction.
  • A chassis must use fan modules of the same series.
  • A chassis can work properly only when two fan modules are running. If one of fan modules is removed from the chassis, reinstall it into the chassis within 3 minutes.

Optical Module

  • Use optical modules certified for Huawei switches. Non-certified optical modules cannot ensure transmission reliability and may affect service stability on the switch. Huawei is not responsible for any problem caused by non-certified optical modules and will not fix such problems.
  • Single-fiber bidirectional (BIDI) optical modules must be used in pairs. For example, SFP-GE-LX-SM1310-BIDI must be used with SFP-GE-LX-SM1490-BIDI.

Cables

Table 1 describes the supported cabling types for a 10GBASE-T Ethernet electrical port.

NOTE:
Category 6 is specified only to 250 MHz. The cabling system must be certified to 500 MHz according to TSB-155 to help ensure 10GBASE-T compliance.
 NOTE:
  • In a newly built equipment room, Category 6A shielded twisted pairs or Category 7 twisted pairs are recommended. These cables can avoid alien crosstalk while having no special installation requirements. In addition, they can be used with other types of cables.
  • If Category 6 shielded or unshielded twisted pairs are used in an equipment room and the cabling systems can meet requirements of TSB-155, follow these rules to route these cables:
    • Separate these cables with other types of cables. If they must be routed in the same cable trough with other types of cables, separated them from other cables using a metal plate.
    • Separate cables as much as possible at the outlet and keep the cables parallel with each other. Most alien crosstalk appears within 20 m away from the outlet. To reduce alien crosstalk, do not bundle cables in the first 5 m to 20 m.
    • If cables need to be bundled, bundle cables with cable ties placed every 150 mm to 300 mm. Leave sufficient slack when bundling cables.
    • You are advised to add no more than 12 cables in a bundle. A bundle cannot have more than 24 cables.
    • Replace Category 6 connectors with Category 6A connectors.

Battery Safety for Huawei CloudEngine (CE) 8800,7800, 6800, and 5800 Series switches

Huawei Data Center Switch includes CloudEngine CE12800, CE12800E, CE1800V, CE5800, CE6800, CE7800, CE8800 Series. In this article, HongTelecom will introduce the Battery Safety for CE8800CE7800CE6800CE5800 series switches.

Battery Safety

The safety information in this document is a reminder and for reference only. Read the detailed safety information in the manufacturer instructions before battery installation, operation, and maintenance.

 DANGER:
Before installing batteries, ensure that you understand the safety requirements and correct connection procedures.

Basic Requirements

  • Do not expose batteries to high temperatures or heat sources such as sunlight, heaters, microwave ovens, ovens and water heaters. Overheating batteries may explode.
  • Do not disassemble or refit batteries, insert foreign objects, or submerge into water or other liquid. Leakage, overheating, fire, or explosion may occur.
  • Wear goggles, rubber gloves, and protective clothing during installation and maintenance to avoid injury caused by electrolyte spillage. Avoid contact with eyes and skin in case of battery leakage. Rinse any accidentally exposed area with water and seek immediate medical treatment.
  • Transport batteries in their specified positions. Do not tilt or turn them upside down.
  • Disconnect the circuit before battery installation and maintenance.
  • Use the same or equivalent type of battery to replace faulty ones. Incorrectly replaced batteries may explode.
  • Do not connect metallic conductors to battery terminals or contact battery endpoints. Battery short circuit or overheating may occur and cause injury.
  • Follow local regulations for battery disposal. Do not dispose of batteries as domestic waste. Incorrectly disposed batteries may explode.
  • Do not drop, squeeze or puncture batteries. Avoid strong external pressure that may cause internal short circuit and overheating.
  • Do not use damaged batteries.
  • Keep children and pets away from batteries to avoid injury or battery explosion.

Requirements for Rechargeable Batteries

  • If discoloration, deformation, overheating, or any other abnormality occurs, replace the batteries before continuing with usage, charging or storage.
  • Tighten battery cables or copper bars using the torque specified in the battery documentation. Insecure connection of battery bolts may cause excessive voltage drop or even overcurrent leading to battery overheating.

Short Circuit Protection

 DANGER:
Battery short circuit will produce a strong spike in current and release a large amount of heat energy that may cause bodily injury and property damage.

Disconnect running batteries before other operations whenever possible.

Flammable Gas Protection

 NOTICE:
  • Do not use unsealed lead-acid batteries.
  • Lead-acid batteries should be positioned and secured horizontally for normal hydrogen discharge to avoid combustion or equipment corrosion.

Improper usage of lead-acid batteries will cause the release of flammable gas. Ensure that batteries are kept in a well-ventilated area and take preventive measures against fire.

Leakage Protection

 NOTICE:
Battery overheating causes deformation, damage, and electrolyte spillage.

If the battery temperature exceeds 60 °C (140 °F), check for and promptly handle any leakage.

 WARNING:
Use a neutralizing liquid to absorb any electrolyte spillage. Exercise caution when handling the leaking battery because the electrolyte can cause injury.

When removing or moving the battery with spilled electrolyte, be careful with the electrolyte that can bring potential injury. If any electrolyte spills, use NaHCO3 or Na2CO3 to neutralize and absorb it.

Battery Discharge Protection

After batteries are installed, ensure that the fuse or circuit breaker is disconnected before powering on the system. This avoids battery damage caused by power discharge in case of long-term power-off.

Requirements for Non-Rechargeable Batteries

  • If discoloration, deformation, overheating, or any other abnormality occurs, replace the batteries before continuing with usage, charging or storage.
  • Do not attempt to replace non-removable, built-in batteries. Doing so may damage the batteries or the equipment. Batteries must be replaced by an authorized service center.
  • Do not throw batteries into fire.

Installation Environment for Huawei CloudEngine (CE) 8800,7800, 6800, and 5800 Series switches

Huawei Data Center Switch includes CloudEngine CE12800, CE12800E, CE1800V, CE5800, CE6800, CE7800, CE8800 Series. In this article, HongTelecom will introduce the Installation Environment  for CE12800CE8800CE7800CE6800CE5800 series switches.

Installation Environment

  • Ensure that the installation environment complies with equipment specifications, including voltage, temperature, humidity, altitude, degree of pollution, overvoltage category, and waterproofing and dustproofing classification.
  • Avoid flammable, explosive gas or smog environments.
  • Keep the installation site free of acidic, alkaline or other corrosive gases.
  • Keep the equipment away from sources of heat or fire, such as the electric heater, microwave oven, oven, water heater, fireplace, candle or other heat generators. Heat may cause the equipment to catch fire or its housing to melt.
  • Do not obscure or cover running equipment with flammable materials such as paper or fabric. This hampers heat dissipation and can cause the equipment to catch fire or its housing to melt.
  • Install and use the equipment and its system in a location with restricted access location.
  • Do not block air vents when the equipment is running. Maintain air vents away from the wall or other objects as required in the Hardware Installation and Maintenance Guide. The minimum distance is 5 cm (1.97 in.) unless specified.
  • Do not use equipment that does not meet IP54 waterproof and dustproof standards in outdoor environments.

Indoor Installation

  • Ensure that there is no water leakage or condensation from air conditioning failure in the equipment room on the top of the equipment. Introducing water into the equipment will cause it to fail.
  • Install fixed equipment with a large hole at the bottom on concrete, tile or other non-combustible surfaces.
  • Prevent rodent and pest infestations at the installation site.

Wall Installation

  • Before drilling holes on the wall, ensure that there is no circuitry, water pipe, or gas pipeline in the wall area to be drilled to avoid bodily injury.
  • Do not place any flammable or explosive objects above or under the equipment, and do not obstruct the equipment with foreign objects within a 1-meter (3.28 ft.) radius.
  • Ensure that no hole are drilled that face upwards to prevent water ingress and equipment damage.
  • Ensure that screws are securely installed. Otherwise, the equipment may fall due to tension after cable connection, causing equipment damage or even bodily injury.

Desktop Installation

  • Ensure that the desk or workbench is in stable contact with the ground.
  • Do not put other items on the equipment.
  • Do not place cups with liquid on or next to the equipment. Spillage may enter the equipment and pose safety risks. If this happens, immediately stop the equipment, cut off the power supply, disconnect all cables, and contact after-sales personnel.

Cabinet Installation

  • Before installing equipment in a cabinet, ensure that the cabinet is securely fastened with a balanced center of gravity. Otherwise, tipping or falling cabinets may cause bodily injury and equipment damage.
  • Leave proper clearance around the equipment.
  • Make sure an enclosed cabinet is adequately ventilated.

Outdoor Installation

Outdoor Installation Requirements

  • Do not work on outdoor equipment and cables in lightning, rainy, snowy, windy (wind force > 6) and other adverse weather conditions.
  • Ensure that the enclosure is class IP54 or higher.
  • Comply with all related local regulations.
  • Set up signs at the site to indicate a dangerous restricted area inaccessible to unauthorized personnel.
  • The scaffolding, platforms, and workbench must pass safety checks to ensure structural integrity. Do not overload the scaffolding.
  • Avoid simultaneous work at heights and on the ground. If such situations cannot be avoided, erect a special protective shed or other protective measures between the height and ground, and clear piles of tools and property from the area.
  • Do not loiter in the work area.
  • Any violations must be promptly pointed out by the site manager or safety supervisor and prompted for correction. If the problem persists, the personnel involved risks suspension that is regarded as absenteeism.

Operators are responsible for accidents resulting from violation of safety regulations or failure to make timely correction. Supervisors also bear responsibility.

Installation at Heights

  • Work performed 2 m (6.56 ft.) above the ground is regarded as work at heights.
  • Work at heights, comply with related local regulations.
  • Only skilled and trained personnel are allowed to work at heights.
  • Stop such work in any of the following conditions: adverse weather, wet steel tubes, and other risky situations. Resume work only after a Huawei safety director and related technical personnel have checked all the equipment.
  • The ladder used in work at heights must be intact and skid-resistant to ensure safe climbing. The recommended angle between the ladder and the ground is 75°. When using a step ladder, the rope must be strong and the ladder must be supported.
  • Place guardrails and warning signs around protrusions and holes to avoid accidents.
 WARNING:
  • Before proceeding, carefully check climbing and safety tools, such as the safety helmet, safety belt, ladder, springboard, scaffolding, and hoisting equipment. If any tool does not meet requirements, fix or replace it immediately, or postpone the work.
  • Wear proper safety PPE and a helmet as well as a belt or waist rope secured to a robust support. Do not tie the belt or waist rope to an unstable object or metal with sharp edges. A fastener that detaches may cause a falling accident.
  • Avoid dropping machinery and tools that may cause injury.
  • Transport all objects from or to the ground level by a strong rope, basket, elevated vehicle, or crane instead of throwing them.
  • Do not pile up scaffolding, materials, and other debris on the ground under the work area at heights that cause traffic obstructions.
  • After completion, disassemble the scaffolding layer by layer from top to bottom. Do not disassemble top and bottom layers at the same time. When disassembling a part, prevent the collapse of other parts.

    For CE12804E, ensure that a fuse or circuit breaker no larger than 240 Vac, 20A(for each AC supplied module), 60Vdc, 63A(for each DC supplied module) is used on the phase conductors that include all current-carrying conductors.

    For CE12808E, ensure that a fuse or circuit breaker no larger than 240 Vac, 20A(for each AC supplied module), 60Vdc, 63A(for each DC supplied module) is used on the phase conductors that include all current-carrying conductors.

    For CE12816E, ensure that a fuse or circuit breaker no larger than 240 Vac, 20A(for each AC supplied module), 60Vdc, 63A(for each DC supplied module) is used on the phase conductors that include all current-carrying conductors.

  • If the power input of the equipment is permanent, ensure that an easy-to access disconnection device is installed on the exterior of the equipment.
  • Use AC-supplied models for TN, TT power systems.

Naming Conventions of Huawei CloudEngine (CE) 8800,7800, 6800, and 5800 Series switches

Huawei Data Center Switch includes CloudEngine CE12800, CE12800E, CE1800V, CE5800, CE6800, CE7800, CE8800 Series. In this article, HongTelecom will introduce the CE8800& 7800& 6800& 5800 series switches naming conventions.

  • CE88: CE8800 series
  • CE78: CE7800 series
  • CE68: CE6800 series
  • CE58: CE5800 series
B Product model category:

  • 10: basic model
  • 50/51/55/56: advanced model
  • 60/61/68/65:
    • CE6860/CE6865: advanced model
    • CE8860/CE8861/CE8868: model that supports flexible service units
  • 70/75: large-buffer model
  • 80: model with Huawei-developed chips
C Special function flag. This flag is not present if the product does not provide special functions.

U: The product supports FC ports.

D Number and type of downlink interfaces:

  • T: GE/10GBase-T electrical interfaces
  • S: GE/10GE SFP+ optical interfaces or 25GE SFP28 optical interfaces
  • Q: 40GE quad small form-factor pluggable plus (QSFP+) optical interfaces
  • xC: For a model supporting flexible service units, x stands for the number of slots and C is a slot identifier.
